Accelerated Reader

AR is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice.  Your child picks a book at his own level and reads at his own pace.  When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer.  Passing the quiz is an indication that your child has understood what was read.  AR gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

Your child will complete a STAR Reading Test to determine their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).  This is simply the range of books, linked to the book levels, that will challenge your child without causing frustration or loss of motivation.

We have a small library in the English Department reserved for users for AR in which all books are labelled with a level.  Your child will select a book of their choice from within their ZPD range.

If your child would prefer to read a book from their own collection or library, then all they need to do is check it is part of the AR program by searching for the title on this website.

Once they are finished the book, your child should complete the online quiz as soon as possible.  The quizzes must be taken in school hours so your child will need to visit the library or a computer room during their break or lunchtime.

Your child should then exchange their book for a new one.
